Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain
513 Henry Street, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn
distribution on Tuesdays from 4:00pm – 6:45pm
For years, the Vermont Pharmacy was a source of fascination and mystery to many residents of Carroll Gardens: boarded-up and neglected, it appeared as both a relic of a distant, more eccentric past and a monument to contemporary urban neglect. But that changed last year, when rumors of its resurrection began circulating and a fund-raiser involving the Greenhorns and roasted goats took over the corner of Henry and Sackett Streets for one day in June. On May 14th, the rumors will bear fruit when the Vermont Pharmacy will soft-open as the Brooklyn Farmacy.
Cobble Hill Blog has photos of the new space, which appears to be the apotheosis of the kind of carefully cultivated urban-pastoral aesthetic that has characterized so many Brooklyn businesses of late.
There are McClure’s products lining the shelves, baskets of local, organic, and seasonal apples, a display case of natural, handmade soaps, and egg creams made behind the counter. There’s an old-timey, robin’s egg blue refrigerator, tiled floors, and burnished wooden pharmacy cases, meticulously restored with help from the Discover Channel’s Construction Intervention (which also lent a hand to the Botta di Vino wine store in Red Hook). In short, it looks beautiful, slightly twee, and like it will be a vast improvement over the disused space that languished on the corner for so long.

The Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters
225 Adelphi Street, Fort Greene, Brooklyn
distribution on Wednesdays, from 4:30pm – 7:00pm
In the best upper grades schools, students are transformed from children who have benefited from a general education to young men and women who have discovered their unique gifts and are prepared to put them to use in the world. Urban Assembly Academy of Arts & Letters (UAAAL) is here to guide every student to that destination. The mission of UAAAL is to provide a diverse group of young learners, grades 6 through 8, with a highly rigorous, student-centered education that will prepare them for leadership and success in college and life. Through academic study and a sharp focus on the creative communication strategies students need to succeed, we will graduate tomorrow’s Ones to Watch – individuals who communicate and lead with our 5 C’s – courage, confidence, creativity, clarity, and compassion.
UAAAL develops Courage, Confidence, Creativity, Clarity, and Compassion through their Arts & Letters Theme – using the arts, and the passion they inspire, for deeper learning. Arts courses include Visual Art, Music & Technology, and Theater. Each grade takes one arts class together every year. In addition, each student chooses their “concentration” from the three, taking that additional class with an extended, more intense curriculum that builds from year to year. A close network of partners, including the Urban Assembly, Citizen Schools, Marquis Studios, Urban Word NYC, Open Road, and Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, among others, help bring classroom learning to life and build capacity for our school. UAAAL also hosts Freestyle Fridays, a community event and Arts & Letters tradition occurring twice a year, celebrating student voice and expression.
